Hosted at Niterói Contemporary Art Museum in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, on Saturday, May 28, Louis Vuitton showcased their 2017 Cruise collection. Creative Director, Nicolas Ghesquière chose this location to complement the unique silhouettes within the collection with a futuristic feel from the outstanding architecture designed by Oscar Niemeyer.
Louis Vuitton’s Creative Director Ghesquiere on the location; “Nature is explosive here, and at the same time you have these wonderful buildings. It’s a beautiful chaos.” Indeed it is.
On topic of the setting and the collection: Nicolas Ghesquière says: “I so admire the power of Oscar Niemeyer’s conviction. His vision, his radicality, his utopia even. Being able to show a fashion collection in such an architecturally powerful space is a sensorial experience. In Rio de Janeiro, what I saw most of all was movement and an explosive energy that lives somewhere between modernism and tropicality. I was fascinated by the constant duality between nature and urbanism and the pictorial explosion it creates. For me, the main question was how to incorporate into my collection all these elements that are part of Brazilian culture, without forgetting that I am just a visitor who brings his own Parisian and French cultural references to the moment.”
With a backdrop of the space ship like building and the Sugarloaf mountain, all eyes were on model of the moment, Mica Arganaraz who opened the show down the winding runway. Hosted in the city that is to hold the summer Olympics, the clothing of the cruise collection are a juxtaposition of sporty Rio-inspired futurism with vibrant retro graphics and an array of eye-catching hues. Accessories that complemented the looks ranged from, boombox bags, sequin scarfs and thong-toe booties.
Celebrity attendance: Oscar winner Alicia Vikander and Jaden Smith, both Louis Vuitton campaign stars, were there, as were Zendaya, Isabeli Fontana and Alessandra Ambrosio.
